Misapplied Botox: Dispelling the Rumors

botox treatments

Botox procedures seem to be subject to an unusually large number of myths and rumors, some of which are untrue while some are quite outlandish. One of these myths portrays Botox as prone to misapplication, causing permanent disfigurement. While it’s true that some can mishandle a dermal filler and apply it to the wrong part of the face, only inexperienced and unskilled surgeons are foolish enough to do it! This article will examine Botox and dispel the countless rumors levied against its use.

Misapplied Botox Is a Rarity

When an inexperienced practitioner injects Botox into the wrong area, the substance travels from the injection site to other muscles in the face. This phenomenon is known as Botox Migration in the medical community. It can result in a variety of health complications, so make sure your plastic surgeon’s team has the requisite training, board-certification, and experience to perform Botox treatments.

Sadly, in various states in the United States, the laws do not restrict Botox injections enough. Any licensed physician, registered nurse, or physician assistant can legally perform Botox injection. In many states, even gynecologists, dentists, and other professionals, who don’t specialize in aesthetic treatments, can also administer Botox treatments.

Dermal fillers and injectable treatments require a specific skill set not learned in other kinds of injections, such as a flu vaccine. Since Botox works by blocking nerve impulses to individual muscle fibers, your injector must know which of the 43 facial muscles require injection, how much substance to inject, and the depth in the muscle to place the needle. There is little to no room for error.

Too little Botox will show no results, and too much can give you that horrible “frozen face.” Injected in the wrong area, too close to the surface, or too deeply, and you may experience facial asymmetry, drooping eyelids, or other issues.

Don’t Risk Your Face

The best way to make sure you don’t go through the harmful aftereffects of misapplied Botox and get the natural-looking, stunning results you deserve, talk to an experienced professional.

Plastic surgeons such as myself, who are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS), have undergone the highest level of aesthetic surgery training in the world. This training involves at least six years of surgical residency training with a minimum of two years in plastic surgery. I am dual board certified by the ABPS, as well as the American Board of Surgery. These rigorous tests prove our knowledge of anatomy and surgical skills.

Injectors under the guidance of certified plastic surgeons are best equipped to perform successful Botox treatments. We spend our careers helping patients of all ages, sizes, and shapes enhance their appearance. Due to our training, we have an intimate knowledge of facial anatomy, including where to inject Botox to achieve the best results.

Also, FDA-approved, authentic Botox is only available through a licensed physician. So, when you decide to work with a board-certified plastic surgeon, you can rest assured we are using the real deal, not some counterfeit Botox imported from another country.
