In 2007 there were a little more than 347,000 breast augmentation procedures in the United States, up 64% from 2000. Each has its advantages. The saline implants are simply saline solution enclosed in a flexible plastic envelope, while silicon implants are composed of a silicon gel in a flexible implant shell.

Saline implants require smaller incisions because they can be placed and then filled with solution. Silicon implants have the consistency of a gel rather than liquid, and many women find that they feel more natural once they have settled into place. If one of the breast implants ruptures, saline solution will be naturally disposed of by the body. A leaky silicon implant will result in silicon escaping the shell and staying in place, relatively close to the implant. In either case, revision surgery will be required.

Medical and Personal Choices

There are also options regarding incisions and even placement of the implant; some doctors opt to place it behind the breast tissue, while others will opt to put it in the chest wall behind the breast and can do so through an incision beneath the arm. Placement behind the breast tissue generally requires an incision in the crease at the bottom of the breast. Those are medical preferences that you will learn about prior to your surgery.
