What is a Breast Lift Procedure?
A breast lift procedure, medically termed mastopexy, is a breast surgery performed to reposition the breasts to achieve a lifted and restored appearance. Breast lift procedures are one of Dr. Tattelbaum’s most commonly performed cosmetic procedures. The majority of breast lift patients wish to undergo the procedure to address breast sagging that has occurred after pregnancy, significant weight loss or as a result of natural aging.
What are the Benefits of a Breast Lift Procedure?
There are many potential benefits that patients can experience from undergoing a breast lift procedure including:
- Lifts breasts
- Reduces breast sagging
- Can reposition the nipples
- Removes excess skin on the breasts
- Improved symmetry
- Can achieve a more youthful appearance
- Increased firmness of breast tissue
Who is a Suitable Candidate for a Breast Lift Procedure?
Factors that tend to make candidates suitable for a breast lift procedure include:
- Desire lifted, tighter and firmer breasts
- Physically healthy
- Are a stable weight
- Do not smoke
- Are not pregnant or breastfeeding
How is a Breast Lift Performed?
The specific aspects of a breast lift procedure will depend on the surgical technique being performed. A full breast lift tends to take around two hours to be performed and normally, general anaesthesia is required. However, less extensive procedures can be performed under local anaesthesia and will not take as long to be performed.
A breast lift procedure is performed by firstly creating an incision line. The location of this incision line will vary depending on the specific surgical technique being performed. The surgical line locations can include around the nipple, from the nipple to the bottom of the breast and under each breast. Dr.Tattelbaum will discuss the incision lines with you during your consultation, so you are clear on the surgical technique, as well as the position of the scars from the procedure.
After making the incision, any excess skin and breast tissue can then be accessed and removed from the breasts in order to lift the breasts. In some cases, the nipple will be repositioned on the breasts to lift the nipple so that it is in proportion to the lifted breast tissue.
What are the Different Types of Breast Lift Procedures?
The specific breast lift technique that will be most suitable for each patient depends on their concerns and surgical goals. During your consultation, Dr. Tattelbaum will be able to recommend the most appropriate breast lift technique for your specific needs. The various types of breast lift procedures include:
Crescent Breast Lift- this is the most minimal breast lift technique and uses a small incision line in a crescent shape around the nipple. Most often this technique is combined with a breast augmentation procedure to alter the position of the patient’s nipples.
Donut Breast Lift- this technique is also performed to achieve a minimal breast lift, but uses an incision line that extends around the entire nipple in a donut shape. In some cases, the donut technique will be needed to alter the position of a patient’s nipple alongside a breast augmentation or can simply be used to perform a small lift to the breasts.
Lollipop Breast Lift– this leaves a scar around the areola and a scar from the areola to the fold of the breast. It is less commonly used because it provides more of a horizontal tightening of the breasts and most breast laxity is vertical. However, this technique may be useful in smaller lifts.
Full Breast Lift– some patients have a significant amount of excess skin or breast sagging and so require a full lift in order to tighten and reposition their breasts. To be able to access all the excess skin and breast tissue, more extensive incision lines are required that are made around the circumference of the nipple, before extending in a straight line to the bottom of the breast then continuing under each breast. This technique is the only way for some patients to achieve the results they desire and achieve tighter and lifted breasts.
Breast Lift with Implants- some North Virginia breast lift patients also have concerns with their breast volume and so desire a breast lift and enhancement. These patients can have a breast augmentation procedure, such as breast implant surgery, performed alongside their breast lift procedure so that their breasts are lifted and enhanced.
Breast Lift and Reduction- other breast lift patients choose to combine their breast lift procedure with a breast reduction as they wish to reduce their breast volume while lifting their breasts. Many patients who have large breasts have concerns over their breasts sagging due to the weight of their breasts, so it is common for patients to combine the two procedures. Sometimes Dr. Tattelbaum will recommend reduction rather than lift alone as heavier breasts will sag again more quickly.
Breast Lift Recovery
Most of our breast lift patients in Northern Virginia take at least one week off work to give themselves time to recover from the procedure. Patients can be prescribed pain medication to help with the earlier stages of recovery where some pain and discomfort can be experienced.
After the surgery, patients will have bandages across the breasts for the first week or so. After this, patients will need to wear a supportive garment across the breasts. Dr. Tattelbaum will discuss all the aftercare instructions and tips with you during your consultation to ensure you are prepared in advance for your recovery period.

Breast Lift Before and After
This woman had a crescent lift one year after breast augmentation to give a slight elevation to the nipples.
In the above photos, a periareolar lift was done to provide additional skin tightening that an implant alone could not provide.
In this set of photos, you can see a woman with so much skin laxity that only a full lift would do the job. A full lift was necessary to remove enough skin to adequately tighten and elevate these breasts.
