Tummy Tuck Washington DC

Many Washington D.C. tummy tuck patients undergo the procedure to address concerns over excess skin or fat that have accumulated on their abdomen. For many patients, a tummy tuck procedure can hugely increase their confidence and result in a more contoured abdomen.

What is a Tummy Tuck?

Although exercise and dieting can help to burn fat deposits and allow patients to lose weight or tone up, it cannot do anything to help remove excess skin. In fact, in patients where skin is already loose, losing weight tends to make their skin even looser.

A tummy tuck procedure, medically called abdominoplasty, is designed to remove the excess skin and fat that has accumulated across the abdomen. Additionally, the procedure is designed to tighten the abdominal muscles and can be combined with abdominal liposuction to further remove unwanted fat deposits from the flanks and even back roll and hips. The surgery, therefore, helps patients to achieve a restored abdomen that may be flatter and more contoured.

Who is a Suitable Tummy Tuck Candidate?

Potentially suitable candidates for a tummy tuck procedure are those who have concerns over the appearance of their abdomen after experiencing significant weight loss or pregnancy. Generally suitable candidates include those who:

  • Are in good physical health
  • Have concerns over excess skin on the abdomen
  • Do not smoke

What are the Benefits of a Tummy Tuck Procedure?

There are many potential benefits of a tummy tuck procedure that patients can experience. This is why previous tummy tuck patients have given the procedure a 94% worth-it rating on RealSelf. Some of the potential abdominoplasty benefits may include:

  • Removes excess skin on the abdomen
  • Tightens the abdominal muscles
  • Helps the stomach become flatter and more contoured
  • Can achieve long-term or even permanent results

Types of Tummy Tuck Procedures

There are various techniques for a tummy tuck procedure that can be performed depending on the extent of concerns and the particular areas of the abdomen that the patient wishes to have addressed. During your consultation, Dr. Tattelbaum will perform an assessment of your abdomen to determine which surgical technique is most appropriate for you. This assessment will include a pinch test, where Dr. Tattelbaum will grasp the skin at the bottom of the abdomen to determine the extent of loose skin. He will determine how much internal or “visceral” fat you carry. This will affect the flatness of the abdomen. Both the pinch test and the degree and location of muscle separation will determine the type of tummy tuck.

Full Tummy Tuck

The most common types of tummy tuck procedures are the full tummy tuck and mini tummy tuck, and the surgical procedure for the two is very similar. The main difference between these two is that the full tummy tuck addresses issues with the entire abdomen, not only the lower region. This technique is therefore appropriate for patients who have concerns regarding both the lower and upper abdomen.

The procedure is performed by creating an incision line across the bottom of the abdomen that runs from hip to hip. From this incision, the muscles of the abdomen can be tightened and the excess skin can be removed. This technique may involve creating a new hole for the belly button which will be discussed and explained during your consultation.

Mini Tummy Tuck

A mini tummy tuck simply addresses the lower region of the abdomen so is suitable for patients who have less excess skin or only have concerns over the lower half of their stomach. The incision line is created across the bottom of the abdomen but is normally shorter than the incision created for a full tummy tuck procedure since the upper part of the abdomen is not accessed.

Fleur-de-lis Tummy Tuck

This tummy tuck technique involves a more extensive surgery and is most suitable for weight loss patients who have a significant amount of excess skin across their abdomen. This technique removes excess skin both vertically, as a full tummy tuck does, and horizontally to ensure all loose skin is removed. By doing so, this technique requires an additional vertical incision line on the abdomen and so the scarring from this surgery is more extensive.

Circumferential Tummy Tuck

Although the fleur-de-lis technique is generally suitable for patients who have lost a significant amount of weight, some of these patients have concerns over loose skin that extends around their entire waist, not just their abdomen. In these cases, a circumferential tummy tuck technique can be most suitable since it is an extended tummy tuck that can remove the skin from the back as well as the abdomen.

Some patients who are older, heavier or who are not physically healthy enough to undergo a tummy tuck procedure, without being at a significant risk, might be recommended a panniculectomy. A panniculectomy is a surgical procedure that removes a wedge of skin and fat in the lower abdomen as well as a patient’s belly button. Healthline explain that a panniculectomy differs to a typical tummy tuck procedure due to the fact the abdominal muscles are not tightened during this procedure.

Tummy Tuck Scars

Scarring is a normal part of a cosmetic procedure and is simply a trade-off for most patients. Tummy tuck procedures typically tend to create an incision line across the bottom of the abdomen that runs from hip to hip. Dr. Tattelbaum plans his incisions low in the bathing suit line so that the scar is covered by your underwear or bathing suit.

The length of this scar will depend on the surgical technique performed as a mini tummy tuck procedure creates a smaller incision line than a full tummy tuck procedure. Additionally, a fleur-de-lis tummy tuck procedure will create more extensive surgical lines and so will leave a patient with more significant scarring.
