Tummy Tuck

Virginia, Maryland Tummy Tuck

The tummy tuck is an aptly named plastic surgery procedure that is most often sought out by women for whom life has taken its toll on abdominal muscles and on the waistline. Pregnancies in particular cause loosening of the abdominal muscles and stretching of the abdomen itself. Employment or just the daily routine of motherhood leaves little time for exercise and the years can add inches to the area around the hips. Men have also sought out tummy tucks for the same problem; for middle aged men and beyond it can sometimes be impossible to get rid of that gut completely no matter how disciplined the diet and exercise program.

A tummy tuck requires a horizontal incision across the abdomen starting on one side at the level of the navel and dipping down to the pubic hair line, then back up to navel level as the incision is completed to the other side of the abdomen. Occasionally the doctor will also make an incision around the navel, for the purpose of removing excess fat or in some cases, to relocate the navel to its original spot. Once the incision is made, the doctor will tighten and refasten the abdominal muscles and the connective tissue beneath them that together provide abdominal elasticity.

Excess abdominal fat is removed, often through the use of liposuction. In some cases excess skin is removed as the abdominal bulge is reduced and sculpted to a flatter, more youthful contour. The abdomen is reshaped through the removal of excess fat and skin, while the abdominal muscles are restored to the point that they can maintain the new profile

Once the surgery is completed and the incisions closed, the abdominal area will be bandaged and perhaps wrapped in a compression garment to maintain position of the shortened and sutured abdominal muscles and to take pressure off the sutured incisions. A tube may be inserted to drain any bleeding or fluid that may develop. Standing and sitting movements may be awkward until the swelling goes down and healing of the wounds has begun. Sudden movements and stretching for something like a high shelf should be avoided during the first week.

In theory, a tummy tuck is a permanent improvement. It will not, however, survive substantial weight fluctuations and probably will need the support of a regular exercise program. A pregnancy after a tummy tuck will obviously have a substantial impact. If you are a smoker your doctor will probably ask you to stop smoking for a couple of weeks before the surgery and you should continue this difficult self-discipline for a couple of weeks after surgery, as smoking can impact the blood clotting process in particular and the healing process in general.

More About Tummy Tuck

How much does tummy tuck surgery cost?

Dr. Tattelbaum charges one flat rate for a tummy tuck. Maryland, Washington, DC, and Northern Virginia area patients who come to us for tummy tuck pay $7500, which covers Dr. Tattelbaum's surgical fee, the fee for our board-certified anesthesiologist, and the cost of the licensed surgical facility where your tummy tuck will be performed. The all-inclusive cost for a mini-tummy tuck is $5,900.

What is the difference between a traditional tummy tuck and a mini-tummy tuck?

In both mini-tummy tuck and full tummy tuck surgery, excess skin and fat are removed in order to contour your abdominal area; liposuction is also often used in conjunction with the procedure. The difference lies mainly in the extent of the surgery. In a mini-tummy tuck, the incisions are shorter, and the opening for the navel does not need to be moved, as it often does in a traditional tummy tuck. Washington, DC, and Maryland residents considering tummy tuck surgery should contact us for a consultation; we will explain your options and help you choose the procedure that would best benefit you.

What is the recovery time for a tummy tuck?

You will experience some swelling and discomfort after your tummy tuck surgery; these will be managed with medication prescribed by your doctor. You should plan to take at least two weeks off of work or school; many people feel comfortable returning after this time, though some prefer to take an extra week or two to recuperate.

Will there be much scarring?

The incisions used to perform tummy tuck surgery will leave a lasting scar, but these can be minimized with proper surgical technique and post surgical care. The incisions are also strategically placed so that the resulting scars can be easily concealed beneath a bikini bottom.
