Breast Correction of Contracture or Malposition
By the time most patients come to my offices in Northern Virginia and Maryland, breast augmentation is an operation that they have been contemplating for years. When they leave after their 12-week follow-up appointment, I consistently hear "I wish I had done this years ago."
What I try to instill in my patients is the sense that I am seeking to help them accomplish their goals. Breast enhancement is not a “one size fits all” procedure. By engaging in comprehensive discussions with patients and conducting a thorough examination, I formulate a plan to enhance, restore, balance and give my patients a sense of being comfortable and whole.
Come in, ask questions, look at pictures, speak to patients. Now is the time.
Now is the time…
Each year countless patients come in to my office with a specific timeframe in mind. They want to look great on their vacation, at the beach, or at an upcoming event. Although breast augmentation is a relatively straightforward procedure and generally takes less than an hour to perform, like much of cosmetic surgery, the ultimate results become apparent in three to six months.
Although patients are usually back at work in less than one week, breast implants after surgery still require time to heal. This is the body’s natural response to recent surgery. It takes three to six months for the implants to settle and relax and give the kind of natural look that patients seek. So, if you're thinking of breast augmentation surgery with a specific timeframe in mind, try to leave a window of at least six to twelve weeks.
Breast Augmentation
What
is breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation surgery involves
the technique by which a woman's breasts
are made larger. This is performed
by using an implant, usually filled
with saline solution, to increase
the size of the breast. The implant
is placed under the chest muscle (pectoralis
major muscle) or above the muscle
via several common incisions. Breast
augmentation is usually performed
as an outpatient procedure under general
or deep sedation anesthesia at our
offices in Maryland and Northern Virginia.
Who benefits
from breast augmentation?
- women who are bothered by the feeling
that their breasts are too small
- weight loss has changed the size
and shape of their breasts
- after having children, their breasts
have become smaller and have lost
their firmness
- dresses that fit well around the
hips are often too large at the bustline
- one breast is noticeably smaller
than the other
- they feel self-conscious wearing
a swimsuit or form fitting top
Is it safe?
Each year, thousands of women undergo
breast augmentation surgery. Currently
the surgery is performed using saline
filled implants. Silicone gel implants
had been used, but are under study
to answer questions raised about their
safety. To date, multi-center randomized
studies do NOT show any increase in
health risks due to the use of silicone
gel, but for now, such breast implants
are only available in medical research
studies.
Surgery always involves risks, such
as bleeding, infection, or implant
failure. Modern technique and carefully
performed surgery minimizes risks
but cannot guarantee a perfect result
every time. For further information,

Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
What
is a breast lift?
Mastopexy, involves reconstructing
the breast by removing excess
skin and correcting droopiness
(ptosis), with little or no
change in total breast volume.
This is most appropriate for
women who are pleased with the
size of their breasts but desire
tightening and reshaping to
achieve a more youthful appearance.
How
is the surgery performed? What
are the risks?
There are several techniques
used. They depend on the surgeon's
preference as well as certain
patient factors that may affect
which technique is best for
them. The most common technique
is demonstrated in the images
here. Scars are usually well
hidden from view by regular
clothing. Occasionally, only
a small amount of skin is removed
for women with mild to moderate
amount of droopiness (ptosis).
In such cases, a limited incision
only around the nipple is used
to remove the excess skin.
Like all surgery, it is impossible
to eliminate risks altogether.
Bleeding, infection, asymmetry,
nipple sensation loss, or skin
loss are known complications.
Using careful technique and
expertise our doctors strive
to minimize all risks.
What
if my breasts are droopy and
too small?
In women who have breast fed
their children, this is a common
problem. Their breasts undergo
atrophy or "shrinkage"
after breast feeding, but the
skin around the breast doesn't
retract to the same degree.
In such cases, a breast augmentation
can be combined with a mastopexy
to correct both concerns. A
consultation with
Dr. Tattelbaum will help answer
any further questions you have.

Breast Reduction
Who is a candidate for breast reduction surgery?
Women with large, pendulous breasts who experience: back pain, shoulder pain, restriction of physical activity, skin irritation, or feelings of extreme self-consciousness.
How is the surgery performed? What are the risks?
There are several techniques used. They depend on the surgeon's preference as well as certain patient factors that may affect which technique is best for them. A consultation with one of our plastic surgeons will help answer any questions you may have. The most common technique is demonstrated in the images here. Scars are usually well hidden from view by regular clothing.
Like all surgery, it is impossible to eliminate risks altogether. Bleeding, infection, asymmetry, nipple sensation loss, or skin loss are known complications. Also, women wishing to breastfeed should delay surgery as this procedure may compromise a woman's ability to breastfeed. Using careful technique and expertise, our doctors strive to minimize all risks.

Breast Correction of Contracture or Malposition
In some women, after
breast augmentation surgery
the scar tissue around
the breast implant may
tighten and cause the
implant to shift position.
If this occurs, the breast
augmentation surgeon will
need to either remove
the implant and re-insert
another or “score”
the scar tissue, allowing
the implant to move back
into place.
