What is ALCL?

On January 26, 2011 the FDA released an advisory notice regarding the association of Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL) in women with breast implants. While ALCL is technically a type of lymphoma it appears to have a very benign course and the condition has been completely resolved by simply removing the breast implant and capsule. It is not a breast cancer. In the past 25 years only 34 cases have been reported in the world among an estimated 10 million+ implanted devices. The American society of plastic surgeons and the American society of Aesthetic plastic surgery are working with the… Read More

The Dreaded Tummy Tuck

I would have to say that that the largest group of patients I see in my daily office life are post partum moms. It is a very consistent group of people with similar requests. The post partum moms usually have very realistic goals. They want to restore the breasts that fell or flattened after child bearing and tighten the tummy that now jiggles, bulges or droops. For purposes of this article I will focus on the tummy. The group of people described above is usually well read, well researched and in good physical shape. So into my office walk a… Read More

Obesity is Costly – Especially for Women

General speaking women have higher living expenses then men- makeup, hair products, skin care products, waxing, weekly manicure and pedicures, monthly facials, quarterly microdermabrasion, feminine products, etc. So, it shouldn’t surprise us to hear obese women have higher living expenses than obese men and non-obese women. ¹Adult women who are obese often spend as much as $4,879 extra towards living expenses, while men often rack up about $2,646 in additional expenses incurred for being obese. Obesity can have an affect on individual’s personal life, as it can cause people to feel self-conscious about their bodies. However, many people don’t realize… Read More

Use Botox For Migraines

We have noticed for years that Patients of ours with a history of migraines have seen subjective improvements in their migraine symptoms when using Botox even for cosmetic purposes. As of last week the food and drug administration approved the use of Botox to treat patients with chronic migraines.  Chronic Migraines are defined as migraines more than 14 days each month each lasting more than four hours. While we continue to perform Botox largely for cosmetic purposes  it is nice to know that our observations are founded and that this treatment can serve a dual role. It is unclear at… Read More

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Meeting

This week I attended the annual meeting of The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery here in D.C. at the National Harbor.  This meeting brings together plastic surgeons from all over the United States and the world. While it would seem to the outside observer that this meeting is all about the plastic surgeons and the innovations in the exhibit halls, in reality this meeting is about safety, consistency and predictability for our patients. Early in its evolution cosmetic plastic surgery was an offshoot and little publicized branch of plastic and reconstructive surgery.  Surgeons had different approaches and techniques that… Read More

When is the best time for cosmetic surgery?

The best time for cosmetic surgery is when you have the time and support to recover. Each operation that I perform has different timing in terms of average recovery.   Things that require pulling or stretching of muscles like tummy tucks for example will need a longer recovery than skin tightening procedures such as breast lift.  While each patient is different I offer some general rules of thumb: 1. Give yourself off about a week for all but the most minor procedures: It is better to be pleasantly surprised and need less recovery time than to need more time and not… Read More
