What goes together? More Than One Procedure of Plastic Surgery

When a patient comes in for a consult I never want that patient to feel as though I am trying to add additional plastic surgery, but it is my job is to point out where certain combinations are more powerful than just the one surgery alone. In plastic surgery, there are certain procedures that must at least be considered together. Some classic examples: Rhinoplasty: Rhinoplasty really needs to be considered with the chin. The reshaping of the nose has a dramatic effect on the profile. If the chin is receding only half the battle is won. Chin implant may be… Read More

Temporary Rhinoplasty?

A number of people have seen us over the past few years asking about the liquid or temporary rhinoplasty. Popularized by a dermatologist in California, it is essentially a technique of using injectable fillers to alter the shape of the nose. If a patient has a bump on top of the nose the bump can be camouflaged by adding filler just above it. In some cases mild asymmetry can be improved. Eventually, fillers will reabsorb and the procedure will have to be repeated. I think it is a good option for people who are not ready to or healthy enough… Read More

Labiaplasty- reducing the size of the Labia

When I started performing Labiaplasty a number of years ago I had no idea how popular it would become. A patient once told me that she regretted not having had it done when she had her breast augmentation; she just didn’t know that I did it. Because of her I added a “while you’re at it” section to my D.C. breast webpage to point out surgeries that are commonly combined. Labial tissue comes in all shapes and sizes. Some have more, others less. Common concerns patients share with me include self-consciousness during sexual activity, difficulty wearing certain clothing or swimwear… Read More

Male Breast Reduction

There are a number of options for male breast reduction and we’ll clear them up in this blog.

Adam and Eve do Plastic Surgery!

I wasn’t looking for it and I didn’t even really think about it until a few weeks after Eve Pandit joined our team. A patient brought the irony to my attention. Yes, together with my Physician’s Assistant we have become Adam and Eve. So who is Eve? I could tell you about her amazing credentials and her extensive experience in the field of plastic surgery, but she is so very much more than that to me. She is a good person, a fine and kind and gentle human being with a soul a mile wide. She is my right arm,… Read More

The Pencil Test For Breasts

The internet says your breast is droopy if you can hold a pencil underneath it. As an experienced plastic surgeon, I disagree.

Men, Liposuction, and the Military

Men tend to be more shy when it comes to cosmetic plastic surgery. While my practice is about 80% women here in the Washington D.C area the U.S. Military unknowingly sends me a steady stream of male patients. Military doctors have decided that one way to evaluate “fitness for duty” is to have a specific ratio of neck diameter to waist diameter. If this ratio is off a discharge could ensue. While I can’t really change the diameter of the neck, I have liposuctioned liters of abdominal and flank fat from servicemen (and women) at bases all over the Maryland,… Read More

Postpartum Restoration A.K.A. The Mommy Makeover

As the proud father of two beautiful children and a plastic surgeon, I have had the first hand opportunity to see how such a magnificent miracle can dramatically alter the female body. Hereditary, unpredictable, and often unfair, pregnancy is a body-altering experience. The body is incredibly intelligent and throughout pregnancy has the ability to change dramatically in response to the hormones associated with it. The breast becomes fuller, the skin stretches and the abdominal wall and pelvic muscles loosen, among other things. Unfortunately, the body does not always do as good of a job restoring itself. Following childbirth, skin loses… Read More

Plastic Surgery after Dramatic Weight Loss in Maryland

Weight loss is not easy as most of us know. If done through diet and exercise healthy weight loss can take months to years. Because of improved techniques for gastric bypass and the lap band procedure, we are seeing more and more patients after dramatic weight loss hoping to look normal again. Tightening all the areas of concern in the weight loss patient covers almost every aspect of cosmetic plastic surgery. Rather than going over every option, I hope to give some guiding principles. It is best to consider cosmetic surgery for weight loss when you achieve your goal weight… Read More

Maryland Plastic Surgeon Dr. Tattelbaum on Facebook, Twitter and Social Media:

I was an early adopter of AOL when my wife and I lived in Boston and she had to telecommute with her office in New York. Maryland, D.C., and Baltimore Maryland became exponentially better when high speed cable came to my home and now FIOS—which I love. I was an early adopter of the web page to promote my practice and educate prospective patients. Now plastic surgery websites are a dime a dozen. I still like to write my own content because I hope that a personal perspective is more interesting than the canned lingo I see so often. The… Read More

Botox or Dysport…. a Year Later:

So a little over a year ago Dysport® came on the market as a competitor for Botox®. We have now had vast experience with both. So which one is better? My opinion… both and neither. If you ask each manufacturer they will certainly tell you why theirs is better. While there may be subtle differences in onset and longevity both do the job and do it well. They both have made my patients very happy. I think that the greatest advantage is to the patient, because there is now competition. While we really haven’t seen any decrease in the cost… Read More

What is ALCL?

On January 26, 2011, the FDA released an advisory notice regarding the association of Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL) in women with breast implants. While ALCL is technically a type of lymphoma, it appears to have a very benign course, and the condition has been completely resolved by simply removing the breast implant and capsule. It is not breast cancer. In the past 25 years, only 34 cases have been reported worldwide among an estimated 10 million+ implanted devices. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery is working with the FDA to follow… Read More

The Dreaded Tummy Tuck

I would have to say that that the largest group of patients I see in my daily office life are post partum moms. It is a very consistent group of people with similar requests. The post partum moms usually have very realistic goals. They want to restore the breasts that fell or flattened after child bearing and tighten the tummy that now jiggles, bulges or droops. For purposes of this article I will focus on the tummy. The group of people described above is usually well read, well researched and in good physical shape. So into my office walk a… Read More

The winter season brings many delightful things – time with family, presents, cookies, pumpkin pie and more. Scarves and other types of outwear accessories are must-haves to keep frostbite… Read More

Obesity is Costly – Especially for Women

obesity in women

Generally speaking, women have higher living expenses than men- makeup, hair products, skin care products, waxing, weekly manicure and pedicures, monthly facials, quarterly microdermabrasion, feminine products, etc. All of these add up to lots of dollars spent in the long run. So, it shouldn’t surprise us to hear that obese women have higher living expenses than obese men and non-obese women.  Adult women who are obese often spend as much as $4,879 extra towards living expenses, while men often rack up about $2,646 in additional expenses incurred for being obese. Some of those costs may be paid by the woman, some… Read More

Use Botox For Migraines

botox for migraines

We have noticed for years that patients of ours with a history of migraines have seen subjective improvements in their migraine symptoms when using Botox even for cosmetic purposes. As of last week, the food and drug administration approved the use of a Botox procedure to treat patients with chronic migraines.  Migraine Symptoms Chronic Migraines are defined as migraines more than 14 days each month each lasting more than four hours.
