More About Liposuction Surgery

Liposuction is a technological development that allows for non-surgical removal of fat through the use of a suctioning device. It can be applied in a number of areas, including the upper arm, the neck, the abdomen, the buttocks and thighs. The most popular choice among women is liposuction of the hips and thighs.

The technique involves the use of a very thin, hollow stainless steel tube called a cannula. This tube is inserted beneath the skin through a small incision, generally performed today under a local anesthetic. Additional anesthetic and fluid is fed into the area where the fat is located through the cannula. The established method of liposuction requires the surgeon to move the cannula back and forth through the area of excess fat, knocking fat cells loose. The fat is then sucked out through the hollow cannula as it moves steadily and evenly through the area where fat is being reduced.

A recent addition to the technology has been the use of laser tipped probes that liquefy fat tissue with highly concentrated heat. These new devices reduce the need for internal anesthetic and also help to reduce bleeding through cauterization. This technique reduces the need for movement of the cannula to free up the excess fat, thereby reducing the pain involved as well as the post operative swelling.

There is a limit to the amount of fat that liposuction can remove, and it takes a skilled hand to execute the procedure evenly so that there is symmetry through area that has been reduced. It is important that the procedure leave the skin with a smooth, contoured profile void of lumps or indentations.

Liposuction is not a substitute for a weight loss program. It is, however, an excellent choice for slimming down thighs, hips or waistlines that show a few too many pounds, as well as for areas that just will not exercise away. Liposuction will induce substantial swelling for a few days after the procedure; you may also be asked to wear a compression garment over the thigh, or upper arm, or buttocks, or whatever area of your body was treated with liposuction. You’ll notice the change right away and it will become even more evident as the swelling subsides.
