Labiaplasty is a little talked about but increasingly popular procedure. I’ll start by saying that I don’t post Labiaplasty photos on my website but you are always welcome to see examples in my office.
Labial tissue comes in all different shapes and sizes. Common patient concerns include difficulty wearing certain clothing, difficulty riding a bicycle, concerns about intimacy.

Labia Minora
The most common concern is the labia minora, the inner vaginal lips. There are essentially two ways to reduce the size of the labia minora.
Pros: linear excision routinely removes the most tissue and has the least eventful healing.
Cons: Some argue the remaining edge of the labia looks less natural and that the scar along the edge could contract and cause painful intercourse.
Comment: This procedure is generally more popular. I have found in my practice that most women who entertain this procedure are eager to remove more rather than less tissue. I find that the scar heals well and does not affect the aesthetics.
Pros: this technique maintains the natural edge of the labia and the scar is less likely to cause contraction.
Cons: This technique generally does not remove as much tissue and can have a higher rate of wound separation because the two edges are sewn back together.
Comment: I perform this technique for women who wish to preserve the natural edge of the labia.
Labia Majora
The labia majora are the fuller, fattier outer vaginal lips. Sometimes the skin here can become droopy or redundant, particularly after weight loss. Excess skin and fat can be removed directly. While this procedure leaves scars they are usually well hidden.
The prominent pubis:
In some women the fat pad over the pubic bone can look prominant. If the patient has good skin tone this area can be reduced through liposuction alone.
If the area is loose it can be tightened or elevated through the use of mini or full tummy tuck. When the abdominal skin is tightened the pubic skin is pulled up. In most of my tummy tucks I reduce, tighten and elevate the pubic area as a routine part of the surgery.
How is labiaplasty done?
Labiaplasty can be performed under a local or general anesthesia. In my own practice it is usually done with patients asleep in combination with other surgeries. The labia are numb for about 12 hours after surgery. Most patients will wear a pad for a few days. Sutures dissolve on their own.
Recovery:
Patients usually return to work within a week with minor discomfort. Sexual relations can usually resume after 3 weeks. Complete healing is between 3- 6 months.
