What is posterior flank liposuction?

Monday, June 18th, 2012

Many of you know that I perform frontal flank liposuction on most of my tummy tucks. For those that need it this area of liposuction gives more curve and contour to the hips and in my opinion makes the tummy tuck look more streamlined and sexy. The frontal flank is the love handle or the area you can grab if you pinch the roll just above your hips. In some people this roll is mainly on the side of the body, but in some it extends all the way around above the buttocks. When it goes around the backside I call this the “posterior flank” and I handle this differently.

With a patient facing upright in preparation for tummy tuck it’s easy to get to the frontal flank for liposuction, but in this position you really can’t get well around the backside for people who want to contour the posterior flank. In patients who have posterior flank liposuction, before the tummy tuck even begins, we place them face down and liposuction from the backside first and then flip them face up to continue with the frontal flank. This positioning allows full contour all the way around the lower trunk.

Not everyone needs the posterior flank liposuction, but for those who have a bulge or fullness above the buttock area it is a powerful tool for contouring the waist and even a good location to harvest fat for grafting or Brazilian butt lift. It can sometimes make a dramatic difference in the size of the waist even beyond what the tummy tuck can do. Tummy tuck is not just about the tummy it’s about the hips and curves that surround it and in some cases liposuction posterior flank can make a huge improvement.

Spring sprang early

Monday, April 16th, 2012

As some of you have undoubtedly noticed I haven’t written a blog in a while. Please accept my apologies. Sometimes work just gets in the way.

I like to write my blogs about personal things and real things and I like to do them (as I think they should be done) on my own. It’s just been crazy busy in our office since before the New Year. Usually there’s a period of time in the winter when people see if they succeed or fail at their New Year’s resolutions, but Spring sprang early this year and people started coming in sooner. I guess you might call it early spring fever.

When the weather warms up more people think about how they will look and feel on the beach in July and August, and whether or not they need some help to achieve their New Year’s resolutions. Who’d have thought that breast implants, tummy tucks and liposuction could be affected by our ever changing weather patterns.

It’s a good and gratifying thing to be able to help someone achieve their goals. Earlier surgery means more time to heal and recover before the summer. Liposuction needs time to shrink, breast implants need time to stretch and settle and mothers need time to heal after mommy makeovers. It all just began a little sooner this year.

I hope that this means people will feel and look a lot better this summer because they had more time to heal. When I find time I will be sure to catch up on the blogs.

Sorry I Kept You Waiting for Your Consultation of Cosmetic Surgery

Tuesday, January 31st, 2012

I find myself running behind in the office and sometimes doing what I hate the most… keeping someone waiting for their cosmetic surgery consultation. I am on your side here. I don’t like waiting in the doctor’s office either.

So first and foremost if you are reading this and I have kept you waiting, or will keep you waiting, I offer you my sincere apologies. There is more to this blog however. I thought you might find it interesting to know how and why we can get backed up.

—–The cascading arrival time: While we have a good scheduling program all it takes is one late arrival to shift the schedule off kilter by 30 minutes or more. Unfortunately that will happen on average about twice during an office day at anyone of my plastic surgery practices in the Washington DC, Virginia area.

—–The exploding consult: for the average consultation we have a pretty good estimate the time it will take for me to evaluate, explain and go over treatments. However, it is extraordinarily common for a patient to book a consultation about one type of surgery but then also ask about two or three more. At 25- 30 minute per topic the math gets a little scary. Interested in knowing more about that topic, read my past blog “What Goes Together- More Than One Procedure of Plastic Surgery”.

—–The mom /friend phenomena: I love it when a patient brings a friend or family member to the consultation another set of ears and eyes is comforting and helpful. It is extremely common though that the friend or family member becomes the second consult in that room at the same time.

—–I am long winded: yes, it’s true. I love to teach and educate my patients and I don’t want anyone to leave feeling they did not get the best and most informative experience they could. So if one topic becomes 3 or if mom or friend has a question I will always feel compelled to answer it in detail.

I hope this doesn’t scare you off. A busy cosmetic plastic surgery practice is a good thing.

So a few tips: Morning consults are less prone to cascading delays, if you’re interested in many things, or so is your companion, just let us know ahead and we’ll leave more time. Bring a book just in case. Whether it’s breast, body, face, nose, or liposuction I’d love to meet you and I’ll do my best not to keep you waiting.
